An Introduction to Coaching
Ask any child why they want to play football and you might be surprised by the
answers they give, I asked this question recently after a training session and
most responded with because they enjoyed the fun of playing the game, and
being with their friends, and that’s what football at a young age should be, fun,
enjoyable, and educational, they turn up week in week out not because they
want a big silver cup at the end of the season, but because they want to play
a game with their friends that gives them some freedom and enjoyment from
the outside world.
Coaching children’s football is never going to be the easiest job in the world,
but it is definitely one of the most rewarding. I am sure if you where to ask any
coach what do you enjoy about coaching young players, the majority would
say, it’s seeing young players develop over time, watching their confidence
grow as their ability and skill level grows, and as they progress their
enjoyment level of the game grows and grows.
There have been a lot of changes recently in the way that we coach young
players, with the FA now bringing in new age appropriate courses things can
only get better, You can now go from a level1 coaching certificate onto the
new FA youth award certificate which is broken down into three modules all
aimed at the age groups of 5-11 years which is excellent for youth team
coaching, and this can only benefit the future of youth football.
As you progress through this coaching resource you are going to learn a lot
about how to train children not only physically but mentally as well as most
coaching manuals only deal with the psychical side of the game i.e. training
drills and exercise, I want to delve first into the physiological side of the game
as this is a very important part of a child’s development, so lets get started by looking at ourselves as
coaches.
